Human Web Initiative
The Human Web Initiative is an independently funded unit working for the Polkadot Community Foundation (PCF). It brings a renewed initiative with a clear direction for the PCF. The Human Web is the vision it works towards for Polkadot: an alternative internet where we own our tools and connect as real people, to reclaim our humanity online.
Who owns the space between us?
If the space between people is where humanity happens, then in the digital age that space is our messages, our calls and our payments. Whoever controls that space controls us.
Industry Web
Big tech giants, social media monopolies and online payment processors sit between us. The services look free, but the price is hidden: our privacy and our data. The Industry Web makes us tenants in someone else’s building.
Human Web
A place where we connect as real people, in spaces that we can shape. We own our tools, we control the space and we define how we connect. Built on Polkadot.
The promise
Web3 began as a movement of hackers and cypherpunks with a promise: to empower the powerless. Much of the industry has since become finance-focused and corporate-driven. The Human Web is a way back to that promise, with the tools Polkadot now makes possible.
The promise is older than Web3. The first newsletter of the People’s Computer Company, in October 1972, opened with these words:
‘Computers are mostly used against people instead of for people; used to control people instead of to free them; Time to change all that — we need a… People’s Computer Company.’
